Great States Insurance Company was domiciled in California and was licensed to transact business in 14 states. Great States wrote only Workers' Compensation insurance and was concentrated in the states of Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada and wrote a lesser amount in California and Illinois. The company was placed into liquidation on May 8, 2001. Great States was a subsidiary of the HIH America Comp & Liability Company which was liquidated simultaneously, but was closed on February 2, 2016.

All claims have been resolved, and pursuant to Court approval, a final distribution of estate assets occurred in September 2019. However, additional funds have become available necessitating another very small distribution which is planned to occur in 2020, after which the estate will work to officially close by year end 2020.
